But the reality is that a machine can look immaculate on the outside while hiding years of poor maintenance under the bonnet.<\/p>\n

And that, just a few minutes later, told a completely different story once we started checking the details that really matter.<\/p>\n
Because there’s one thing we’ve learned after inspecting hundreds of machines:<\/p>\n
A machine can be washed in a morning. Proper maintenance takes years.<\/strong><\/p>\n Everyone prefers a clean machine.<\/p>\n That’s normal.<\/p>\n First impressions matter.<\/p>\n But one of the most common mistakes when buying used machinery is confusing cleanliness with maintenance.<\/p>\n A machine may have been freshly painted.<\/p>\n It may look excellent in the photographs.<\/p>\n And still have significant issues hidden beneath the surface.<\/p>\n On the other hand, we’ve also seen machines with a more modest appearance that had received outstanding maintenance throughout their working life.<\/p>\n That’s why we always look beyond the paintwork.<\/p>\n Before checking many technical aspects, there’s one question we always like to ask:<\/p>\n Is there a maintenance history?<\/strong><\/p>\n It’s not always available.<\/p>\n But when it is, it often provides valuable information.<\/p>\n It helps us understand:<\/p>\n Because a machine isn’t defined only by how it looks today.<\/p>\n It’s also defined by how it got there.<\/p>\n Sometimes a folder full of invoices is worth more than dozens of photographs.<\/p>\n When we find records of:<\/p>\n We usually see it as a positive sign.<\/p>\n Not because it guarantees a perfect machine.<\/p>\n But because it shows that someone cared enough to maintain it properly.<\/p>\n And that often makes a huge difference over time.<\/p>\n There’s one area where it’s much harder to hide reality.<\/p>\n The engine compartment.<\/p>\n When inspecting a machine, we pay close attention to:<\/p>\n Many times, simply opening the bonnet provides a very good indication of how the machine has been treated.<\/p>\n A tidy, well-maintained engine inspires confidence.<\/p>\n And often reflects the care given to the rest of the machine.<\/p>\n There are signs that, on their own, don’t mean much.<\/p>\n But together, they often tell a reliable story.<\/p>\n For example:<\/p>\n Small details.<\/p>\n But often the signs of an owner who sees maintenance as an investment rather than an expense.<\/p>\n Another area we always inspect is the operator’s station.<\/p>\n Because years of use are difficult to hide.<\/p>\n We pay attention to:<\/p>\n A well-kept cab often suggests that the machine has been in good hands.<\/p>\n And that usually reflects positively on the rest of the equipment.<\/p>\n One situation always makes us more cautious.<\/p>\n When you ask about maintenance and nobody remembers.<\/p>\n Nobody knows when the filters were changed.<\/p>\n Nobody can find service records.<\/p>\n Nobody has any documentation.<\/p>\n Does it automatically mean the machine is bad?<\/p>\n No.<\/p>\n But it does mean we need to inspect it more carefully.<\/p>\n Because less information means more uncertainty.<\/p>\n Surprisingly, visible faults are not usually our biggest concern.<\/p>\n Faults can be repaired.<\/p>\n What worries us most is a lack of consistent maintenance.<\/p>\n Because it creates cumulative wear across multiple components.<\/p>\n And that’s much harder to assess.<\/p>\n After many inspections, we’ve reached a simple conclusion:<\/p>\n Don’t buy paint.
