But they\u2019re also one of the things that cause the most confusion.<\/p>\n<p>Because in this industry, we\u2019ve seen it all:<\/p>\n<p>Machines with low hours that are completely worn out.<\/p>\n<p>And machines with high hours that are still in very good condition.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why, when we\u2019re asked how many hours are too many, our answer is always the same:<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s not just the number of hours that matters, but how those hours were accumulated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Two machines, two very different realities<\/h2>\n<p>Some time ago, we assessed two similar machines.<\/p>\n<p>One had around 6,000 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The other had more than 14,000.<\/p>\n<p>On paper, the choice seemed obvious.<\/p>\n<p>But once we inspected them, the reality was very different.<\/p>\n<p>The machine with more hours:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Proper and consistent maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Used in relatively light working conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Hydraulic system in good condition.<\/li>\n<li>Minimal play in components.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The machine with fewer hours:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Irregular maintenance.<\/li>\n<li>Used in more demanding conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Noticeable play in components.<\/li>\n<li>Premature wear in several areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Conclusion: the machine with 14,000 hours was the better buy.<\/p>\n<h2>Not all operating hours are equal<\/h2>\n<p>One operating hour doesn\u2019t always mean the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>An excavator used for light earthmoving work is not the same as a machine working in a quarry or on demolition projects.<\/p>\n<p>Wear depends much more on how the machine has been used than on the number of hours alone.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we always ask:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What type of work has it performed?<\/li>\n<li>In what kind of environment?<\/li>\n<li>How many operators have used it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These answers tell us more than the hour meter.<\/p>\n<h2>Operating hour ranges (a practical guide)<\/h2>\n<p>There are no fixed rules, but there are some useful guidelines:<\/p>\n<h3>Up to 5,000 hours<\/h3>\n<p>Relatively young machines. Even so, they can be in poor condition if they haven\u2019t been properly maintained.<\/p>\n<h3>5,000 \u2013 10,000 hours<\/h3>\n<p>A very common range. At this stage, maintenance history becomes crucial.<\/p>\n<h3>10,000 \u2013 15,000 hours<\/h3>\n<p>These can still be perfectly good machines, but the hydraulic system, engine and component play should be inspected more carefully.<\/p>\n<h3>More than 15,000 hours<\/h3>\n<p>This isn\u2019t necessarily a problem in itself. We\u2019ve seen machines with this many hours that are still in very good condition.<\/p>\n<h2>What we look at before the operating hours<\/h2>\n<p>When we assess a machine for our stock, the hour meter is just one piece of information.<\/p>\n<p>What really matters is the machine\u2019s actual condition.<\/p>\n<h3>Play in components<\/h3>\n<p>This can reveal how heavily the machine has actually been used and the type of work it has performed.<\/p>\n<h3>Hydraulic system<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most expensive areas to repair:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pumps.<\/li>\n<li>Cylinders.<\/li>\n<li>Control valves.<\/li>\n<li>Leaks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Engine<\/h3>\n<p>An engine can last for many thousands of hours if it has been properly maintained.<\/p>\n<h3>Maintenance<\/h3>\n<p>When there is a documented service history, everything changes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Invoices.<\/li>\n<li>Inspections and servicing.<\/li>\n<li>Documented repairs and maintenance work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Yes, operating hours can be manipulated<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a reality.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why we never recommend making a decision based solely on the hour meter.<\/p>\n<p>There are much more reliable signs:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seat wear.<\/li>\n<li>Pedal wear.<\/li>\n<li>Control wear.<\/li>\n<li>The overall condition of the cab.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The machine always tells its own story.<\/p>\n<h2>Hours don\u2019t pay for repairs<\/h2>\n<p>Two typical examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Machine A:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>7,000 hours<\/li>\n<li>Poor maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Hydraulic leaks<\/li>\n<li>Significant play in components<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Machine B:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>12,000 hours<\/li>\n<li>Proper maintenance<\/li>\n<li>Good overall condition<\/li>\n<li>Proper operation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Which one is the better buy?<\/p>\n<p>The hour meter doesn\u2019t decide.<\/p>\n<p>The machine\u2019s condition does.<\/p>\n<h2>So\u2026 how many hours are too many?<\/h2>\n<p>There is no magic number.<\/p>\n<p>What really matters is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How those hours were accumulated.<\/li>\n<li>How well the machine has been maintained.<\/li>\n<li>What condition it is in today.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A machine with high operating hours can continue working reliably for many years.<\/p>\n<p>And a machine with low hours can develop problems very quickly.<\/p>\n<h2>What we\u2019ve learned at BANERAI<\/h2>\n<p>After many years in this industry, the conclusion is clear:<\/p>\n<p><strong>don\u2019t buy hours, buy condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hours provide information.<\/p>\n<p>But they don\u2019t make the decision.<\/p>\n<p>And when it comes to used machinery, the real difference is rarely found on the hour meter, but in everything that number doesn\u2019t tell you.<\/p>\n<h2>Looking for used construction machinery?<\/h2>\n<p>At BANERAI, we assess every machine beyond its operating hours.
